Transcript of video: On controversial issues, people often split into factions…viewing the problem in terms of “us” and “them.” You can use TB to understand how these perspectives depend on the context of the group.
Label two TB DEMOCRAT and REPUBLICAN, and place members of each group inside. Take a member from each group, and point their reflective surface at the political system. Ask “how does Al Gore view the DEMOCRATS?” Since he is a member, he views the Democrats as “US.” Now ask “how does Al Gore view the REPUBLICANS?” Since he is not a member, he views the Republicans as “THEM.” Now ask your child “how does GEORGE W BUSH see the political groups?” Their answer should be opposite: George W Bush sees the Republicans as “US” and the Democrats as “them.” This example shows that a person’s perspective on the political system depends on group membership. Try this activity for any groups and any concepts, to help your child understand differing perspectives on complex issues.
