June's Teacher Librarian Features ThinkBlocks and Patterns of Thinking Method

June 12th, 2009

Scarecrow Press — Drs. Cabrera and Colosi have published a feature article in the June 2009 issue of Teacher Librarian, The JoDrs. Cabrera and Colosi write about teaching thinking skills in the library.urnal for School Library Professionals.

The article, entitled "The Library Is the Place: Knowledge and Thinking, Thinking and Knowledge," proposes that librarians are uniquely placed to assist students across the grades in their metacognitive processes.

"We take for granted the importance of training students in methods of research. In other words, we teach them how to go about gathering content knowledge. Librarians willingly give much time to this. What's missing is the analogous training to help them use—and hone—their thinking skills."

This article describes how we can develop thinking skills through guiding questions rooted in the four patterns of thinking and by using tactile manipulatives, including ThinkBlocks, so that students can handle anything they're thinking about.

"With the Patterns of Thinking Method, we can stop wondering about how to teach students to think and get on with the process."
