New Book Provides Blueprint for 21st Century Education

September 25th, 2009

Dr. Derek Cabrera and Dr. Laura Colosi have released their latest book, Thinking at Every Desk. Published by the Research Institute for Thinking in Education, the book sets forth their vision to change the world of education and learning.  Thinking at Every Desk is the culmination of over two decades of research in educational theory and application.  The book provides a detailed method for teaching both content knowledge and thinking skills through the Patterns of Thinking Method, four simple rules that enable teacher and student to become actively engaged in learning.

Thinking at Every Desk describes the teaching of both what to know and how to know.   This is achieved through the Patterns of Thinking Method, four simple rules that are universal to the world of ideas.  The four rules are introduced through a series of descriptive examples, vignettes, systematic explanations, and simple activities that are both engaging and inspirational.  The flow of the book makes for an enjoyable read, and ease of communication enables the reader to begin applying the concepts immediately.  Drs. Cabrera and Colosi have managed to provide a simple book with simple rules that can be applied to all levels of learning from Pre-K through PhD, and they have done so in a way that is easy to grasp and entertaining to read.

At the book's launch party, Dr. Colosi said, "This book is particularly important to us. It sets forth our vision for the future of American Education."  Thinking at Every Desk provides teachers with a practical method to teach their students to think—from PreK to PhD.  For school and district leaders, the book serves as a blueprint for 21st Century education.

After reading the book, Jennifer Orr, a Kindergarten teacher and Yellow Belt Ninja in the Patterns of Thinking Method, said, "Dr. Cabrera and Dr. Colosi are able to explain complex ideas in ways that are straightforward and fascinating. They are engaging and brilliant."

Yellow Belt Ninja and Special Educator Lenor Cummings said, "The Patterns of Thinking has brought to the surface all that we know as educators but couldn’t put into words. Through the use of this theory and tools my students will have a better chance to access the curriculum that is being provided.  I am now better able to understand my students thinking.  These are tools that they can use for a lifetime."

Thinking at Every Desk can be purchased online.  A free downloadable chapter and additional comments about the book are also available.
