Otto Frederick Rohwedder

1917

Bread has been around since Neolithic times. Sliced bread (in the perfectly even, symmetrical way we know today) has only been around since 1928. In 1916, a jeweler in Iowa named Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented a machine to slice bread in even slices, but the plans were destroyed in a factory fire. The machine was denigrated by bakers who thought that sliced bread would dry out too quickly, so Rohwedder added a device that immediately wrapped the bread, and in 1928, it went to work.

Our Thoughts?
Otto Frederick Rohwedder saw that when people buy a loaf of bread, they don?t just eat it whole. Biography of Otto Frederick Rohwedder (Des Moines Register)
