Alexander Fleming
1928
Bacteriologist Alexander Fleming came into his lab one day to see his experiment with staphylococci bacteria ruined. He had left Petri dishes of the bacteria on a windowsill, and now the dishes were growing mold. Instead of simply throwing the experiment out and starting over, Fleming looked at them through a microscope than discovered that the dishes were clear of bacteria around the spots of mold. The mold was dissolving the bacteria! Fleming had discovered a substance that was to save the lives of millions of people-penicillin. In the words of Bertolt Brecht, "intelligence is not to make no mistakes. But quickly to see how to make them good.?
