Jim Henson

1954-1990

Jim Henson didn't start out as a puppeteer. As a young man, he was interested in television and saw an opportunity to appear on a children's television program with puppets. From there he worked as a puppeteer on other television shows, and used his art and theatre design experience to develop a distinctive style of puppet that he dubbed the "Muppet." Henson's Muppets, and Muppet-like puppets made after he died, are iconic figures of the 20th and 21st centuries, appearing in TV shows such as The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, and Fraggle Rock, and movies including Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.
